Indeed, a New Nigeria Is Possible

I read this true story “Men Don’t Cry, But I Cried” by John George Itodo and felt something stir deep within me. Something familiar, something we are often told no longer exists. Hope! Not the loud, performative kind, but the quiet, undeniable kind that shows up when humanity rises instinctively, without permission, without prejudice.

In that moment at Games Village Junction, Nigeria revealed her truest self. Not the Nigeria of headlines and hashtags. Not the Nigeria of division, suspicion, and endless blame. But the Nigeria that lives in the hearts of ordinary people.

Men who were strangers did not ask for names, tribes, religions, or political leanings. They did not pause to calculate risk or reward. They saw danger, and they moved. Fire extinguishers were emptied. Shirts were sacrificed. Hands were burned. A leg was injured. Women screamed instructions and passed water. Policemen stayed, not because they had to, but because it was right.

This is the Nigeria we forget to tell ourselves about. The one where Musa, Obi, Femi, Andrew, Mike, names that represent every divide we argue over became simply brothers. The one where compassion outran fear. The one where love showed up before identity.

If this could happen in the chaos of traffic, in the heat of flames, among people who owed each other nothing then tell me, sincerely why is a New Nigeria impossible?

Perhaps the tragedy is not that we are irreparably divided, but that we have allowed a few loud voices, bad leadership, and repeated disappointments to drown out countless quiet acts of goodness. Perhaps we have forgotten that nations are not built by slogans, but by people and the people, clearly, are still good.

Yes, a New Nigeria is possible.
Because it already exists in flashes like this. In moments when humanity wins. In times when Nigerians choose each other.

What we need is to remember to retell these stories, to believe again. And to build a country that reflects the kindness its people already carry.

God bless the good people of Nigeria. God bless the Nigeria we know is possible.
